Your Virtual Dyslexia Practitioner

When you learn that someone close to you has difficulty reading, writing, and spelling you search online for solutions. Some of your searches may include - "dyslexia," "dyslexic," "dyslexia test," "reading online," or "tutors near me." If the person you are helping does not have a diagnosis of dyslexia, you may be searching for ways to help a "struggling reader." Whatever your search entails, I appreciate that you found my website and hope it gives you confidence as you find solutions.

As Your Virtual Dyslexia Practitioner, I provide individualized, Orton-Gillingham instruction (online and face-to-face) which is effective when teaching reading, writing, and spelling to struggling readers and dyslexics. All virtual sessions are multi-sensory and delivered through a HIPPA compliant, online platform (Cisco Webex or Zoom).

Orton-Gillingham is an instructional approach intended primarily for use with individuals who have difficulty with reading, writing, and spelling of the sort associated with dyslexia. The Orton-Gillingham Approach (OG) is focused upon the learning needs of the individual student and for students who have dyslexia or similar learning differences, and language elements must be taught directly and systematically. About Me

A number of years ago, while working as a commercial artist, I realized that I was not making a difference in people's lives, so I returned to school and earned a degree as a special educator. Most of my work since has involved the use of computers to help students learn. As a learning specialist supporting worldwide clients who were seeking materials to help their struggling and dyslexic readers, I became aware of the imminent need for highly trained professionals to help reach people especially in underserved areas. Those conversations birthed my online tutoring business. A connection was made because I know firsthand the pain, stigma, and challenges that learning differences can bring to a person's daily life. Having personally struggled with a lifetime of learning differences that affected my ability to read, write, spell, and process information, I can understand my students' struggles.

To ensure that I was providing the best learning available, I became trained and certified at the Associate Level by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. My background and training give me the incentive to leave no stone unturned in my effort to help students find the right tools to use as they acquire new knowledge. Even if their reading challenges are paired with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), processing disorders, a learning disability that affects a person's handwriting and fine motor skills called dysgraphia, memory challenges, or they are on the autism spectrum, I work to accommodate them. I have delivered over 3,300 hours of online reading tutoring since 2001 and over 1,500 hours of Orton-Gillingham tutoring since 2007.

Service Overview

As Your Virtual Dyslexia Practitioner, I deliver online Orton-Gillingham (OG) tutoring sessions through Cisco-Webex and Zoom which are platforms deemed safe (HIPPA compliant).

Once you decide to engage my tutoring services, we develop and sign our tutoring contract.

The student then takes The Phonological Awareness Test 2 which enables me to determine the student's phonological and phonemic strengths and weaknesses. Phonological awareness refers to the overarching skill of identifying and manipulating units of language like words, syllables, and onsets and rimes, while phonemic awareness refers to the ability to manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken language. The test results are compiled in a report that is shared with you and explains where in my scope and sequence I will begin our lessons.

Once testing is completed, we begin our tutoring sessions.
